A community demonstration

Safer Inside.

The Safer Inside Demonstration is a full-scale, operational demonstration model of an overdose prevention site open to the community for education and outreach from August 28 – 31, 2018 in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood.

Presented by the Safer Inside community and the Tenderloin Health Improvement Partnership (TLHIP), designed by Capital One Design Pro Bono, and hosted by GLIDE, this collaborative project will demonstrate the integration of safe injection services (SIS) into an existing multi-service organization. The week-long exhibition will provide experiential learning opportunities through interactive displays and guided tours, and allow for community engagement through multiple events, including speaker panels and forums. As a prototype, this project will also provide opportunities to test operational principles and obtain feedback from people who inject drugs, various service providers (including Tenderloin medical clinics, harm reduction programs, and treatment programs) and the community at large.

The Safer Inside Demonstration is scheduled for August 28 – 31, 2018 at 330 Ellis St. (entrance on Taylor St.).  This coincides with the annual Californian Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Conference - The State of the Art in Addiction Medicine (Aug 29- Sept 1) and Overdose Awareness Day (Aug 31).

Our Mission

The Safer Inside Demonstration will allow Tenderloin residents and businesses, community organizations, city agencies and a broad spectrum of other city-wide stakeholders to experience a realistic model of supervised injection booths and related harm reduction services. Entering the physical space will offer individuals and groups the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of SIS functionality, the scope of harm reduction approaches, services and treatment, and insight into this humane approach to improving health and safety for all Tenderloin residents, especially those who inject drugs. For one week, the exhibition will be a gathering place for the community to learn, share, and work in partnership to establish safe injections sites in San Francisco.
